ACSI Palermofoto at Voies Off

Regard Personnel Espace Commun is the title of the collective exhibition realised in Arles by Palermofoto as part of the opening week of the Voies Off 2016 held at the extraordinary location of the Hôtel Particulier Dervieux (5, rue Vernon), the exhibition occupied the entire first floor the ground floor and the staircase. Said like that it could seem like a completely normal thing. In fact, in practice, the size of the location and the impossibility to use the walls and rearrange the furniture has kept the creativity of the authors exhibited more than occupied.

As for the exhibition itself the title immediately declares their intention: Personal Glimpses Communal Space, or sixteen photographic points of view that share the same space. It is useless to look for a common thread among the individual works, if not the choice to show up in the same space with the intent to showcase their work and measure themselves against an international audience. On the subject of the sixteen authors on display, their names are Piero Alfano, Riccardo Bandiera, Andrea Belloni, Cinzia Campari, Maria Cardamone, Roberto Chechile, Enrico Doria, Fabio Florio, Alberto Gandolfo, Simone Ludovico, Manuela Marchetti, Sara Musolino, Davide Palmisano, Roselena Ramistella, Giuseppe Sinatra, Peppe Tornetta, Domenico Veneziano, Salvo Veneziano.

The originality of the show can already be grasped from the entrance, where you are greeted by images of Alberto Gandolfo arranged in part on the floor on a carpet and partly, again on the ground, in semi-transparent water-filled containers to emphasise with the setup the sense of the work. Going to the upper floor on the wide staircase, which is also used to exhibit part of the works, the skill of the authors to exploit the spaces is understood.

The one thing that goes highlighted to those who have never attended the Voies Off is that many of the exhibitions in the programme are realised in environments, which are not usually designated for this. Often furnished houses in which the setup has to take into account the environmental features. If this is true in many cases, the Hôtel Particulier Dervieux s really a very special case. The owners are in fact antique dealers and restorers. Monsieur Dervieux’s evocative restoration laboratory is separated from the entrance by a glass door and the decor of the building is basically a natural extension of the laboratory itself. The decor of the building therefore consists in absolute majority of carefully restored antique furniture, the value of which is quite substantial.

From this comes the need (explicitly underlined by the even if helpful owners) to set up the exhibits without using nails or move valuable antiques anywhere. The challenge was therefore to integrate sixteen glimpses all very different from each other in an environment which is very well defined and where it was not possible, for example, to even plant a nail. So admirable, as pointed out by Anne Clergue – daughter of Lucien Clergue, the creator of the Rencontres – while visiting the collective, the creative ability of the authors to make the most of a surely very evocative environment, but equally complex to setup.

We from FPmag shared the space with Palermofoto during our stay in Arles, using it not only as a logistics base, but even to record the short video interviews turning into a study one of the many rooms of the Hôtel Particulier Dervieux into a study. An experience that has enabled us to live inside the Voies Off and that we will surely do everything to repeat next year. [ Sandro Iovine ]
