Rome in Black and White: A Masterclass with Sandro Iovine

Rome is more than a city of warm hues and golden sunsets; it is, above all, an architectural organism defined by volume, deep shadows, and sharp contrasts that seem tailor-made for a tonal range spanning from white to black. This perspective forms the core of the Rome in Black and White workshop, an educational itinerary designed to analyse the Capital through a formal rigour that transcends mere tourist documentation.

Between Urban Reportage and Rationalist Aesthetics

The programme, led by Sandro Iovine, unfolds through a visual narrative that juxtaposes the layered history of the Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere with the metaphysical geometries of the EUR district and the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana. The objective is twofold: to achieve technical mastery of light and to develop the critical faculty required to subtract colour, allowing the structural essence of the subjects to emerge.

An audience with a master photographer

Enhancing the experience is an opening evening featuring a significant encounter with Tony Gentile. A leading figure in international photojournalism, Tony Gentile will share his vision during a convivial dinner, offering participants theoretical and personal insights before they head out for field shooting sessions. It is an opportunity to reflect on the role of monochrome as a conscious linguistic choice in documenting reality.
