The sea in the eyes

The sea as theme deserves the recognition of having crossed all ages, with different results depending on who interprets it, perhaps because water is the fluid element par excellence: devoid of a definite form, it is intrinsically adaptable and therefore interpretable, malleable, it follows the forms and emotions of those who meet her.

The exhibition Emergence presents, at LINKE.lab in Milan, a selection of photos taken by three authors who return very different visions of the same theme: Lorenzo Castore, Loris Savino and Margherita Chiarva.

The images of Castore are poetic and elegiac, where the sea looks revealing and iridescent thanks to an epiphany of light and shapes; in those of Margherita Chiarva, of a thick, coarse grain, the sea seems to be a memory of a dream that, broken into silver bromide particles, thus creates a visual experience in which the details gain importance and shape emotions. Different again are those of Loris Savino which are dreamlike and surreal, characterized by broken shapes, by the alchemy of light and air, in an estranged atmosphere that forces the spectator to a different, hypnotic fruition in which individual movements loose context.

«Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. [...] Consider all this; and then turn to this green, gentle, and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself?» (from Moby Dick by Herman Melville).
