World Press Photo '17

Since twenty-three years Galleria Carla Sozzani presents in Milan the World Press Photo, one of the most significant award of photojournalism in the world, now in its 60th edition.
The World Press Photo of the Year honors the photographer whose visual creativity and skills made a picture that captures or represents an event or issue of great journalistic importance in the last year.

A group of internationally recognized professionals in the fields of photojournalism and documentary photography – chaired by Stuart Franklin, Magnum Photos photographer – convened in Amsterdam to judge all entries. They examined 80,408 images taken in the previous year by 5,034 photographers coming from 125 nations. The winner of the Photo of the Year 2016 is Burhan Özbilici’s picture – which also won first prize in the Spot News Stories category – that shows how Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, a 22-year-old off-duty police officer, assassinated the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, at an art exhibition in Ankara, Turkey, on 19 December 2016. Four are the winners between the Italian photographers: Giovanni Capriotti with Boys Will Be Boys (winner in the Sports section-stories), Francesco Comello with Isle of Salvation (third-stories in the Daily Life section), Antonio Gibotta, Controluce agency, with Enfarinat (third-ranked in the Portraits Stories category) and Alessio Romenzi with We are not any Prisoners Taking (third in the category General News-stories).

The awards are shared in eight categories, each divided into single shots and stories: News, Daily Life, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Portraits, Sports, Spot News, that are destined to 45 photographers from 25 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Syria, New Zealand, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States. Each year the World Press Photo Foundation brings together the winning photographs in a traveling exhibition through 45 countries, including China, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the UAE, and is seen by more than 4 million people.
