Unexpected Stories

ILEX Gallery presents Unexpected Stories by Marina Sersale, an intimate show of 24 black and white photographs all taken with the iPhone.
Marina Sersale is an autodidact photographer, with a particular sensibility to the interaction between light and shadow, and this is her first solo show. She started taking photographs with the purchase of her first iPhone in 2012, posting her pictures on Instagram. «I'm not interested in the obvious beauty of places or people – said the author –, but in what is not immediately visible, or in what becomes visible when you extrapolate one part of a scene and show the interaction between various elements within it to create something new. For me, reality is not necessarily what you see, but also what you choose to look at».
As the curator of the exhibition Francesco Zizola explains, her work «evokes traces from which, looking deeper, we find the secret truth of things. [ ... ] Just like in a metaphysical reflection, a tribute to Giorgio de Chirico, the images of Sersale seem inspired by that metaphor of the revealing light belonging to the vast land of dreams, of the unconscious, a land where “every person and every object takes on… a more mysterious appearance; the ghosts of beings and things that appear to us; ghosts that, when the light is turned on, return to their unknown kingdom." (Giorgio De Chirico, Ebdòmero, p. 90)».
Unexpected Stories will be inaugurated on Saturday, March 19th 2016, at 6,30 pm.

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer.
