Options for Walls

Can one take control of the surrounding space through photography? The Swiss author Maia Gusberti tries to find an answer to this question. Her mainly conceptual work, presented in 2013 in the exhibition Transform, is a picture of a wall that has been brought to the its real dimensions and laser printed in black and white on A4 sheets which have then been mounted and hanged on a wooden surface of the size of the original wall. The newly obtained wall is document and copy at the same time. The fact that this object was then brought in the context of an istitutional exhibition resulted into an even further passage and transforming the wall in installation. At every new exhibition, a picture of the wall is taken in its context and the image obtained, with the same tecnique above, creates an overlapping on the wall at the next exhibitions. This way the wall finds always new locations and overcomes its intrinsic spatial limit, and the image is shaped again and is continuously transformed maintaining in the meantime traces and documentation of the different passages of its existence.
The work of the Swiss author has its roots in the conceptual aspects of the medium and its deepest nature. The effect we have in front of this wall, that seems to infinitily refracts in itself, it is destabilisingm and reference back to its objective location in space and time and to the characterictic fragmentation of a mosaic.
One of those artistic objects that swing constantly between the absolute genius and a worrying obsessive syndrome. [ S. I. ]
