Crossover Category | Honourable Mentions 2015

While selecting the best project for the Crossover category of the YToI 2015, we realised that although there were lots of works deserving our attention, most of them were not coherent with the category they fell under. For this reason we decided to give special mentions to two works only, presented by:

Andrea Facco | Italy
Le Tour du Monde en un jour

Andrea Facco certainly has not used an innovative visual language, but he has recurred to geolocalisation data as a fundamental part of the context focused on the architectural aspects. This data is inserted in the context of the title, which is inspired by the famous novel, creating a series of logical interactions with the event linked to the images and the technological vision of space established in our time. Andrea Facco writes, «I have mangled the title of a famous novel to name these pictures: Le Tour du monde en quatre-vints jours, where the protagonist travels around the world in 80 days. Here on the contrary, it is possible to admire different countries, populations, cultures and food in one single day. In that single day I had the chance to realise that this architecture represents not only the right approach to the future of alimentation and architecture, but also that each one of them represent somehow its people with their peculiar characters: some architecture is more open to external views where people are more "exuberant", others are still so closed to the outside that it is difficult to think and understand the interior beauty of the building and of the very same people. This is for me the Expo2015, a snapshot of our architectural and cultural present».

Artem Surkov | Russia
Intimate

The detachment of the emulsion lifts in instant photography it is a well-known technique used all over the world. Artem Kurkov's merit is to have associated with this technique, that we can define creative, a meaning strictly linked to a well-defined personal project. Artem Surkov writes: «These are Polaroids that have been treated with the emulsion lift technique and consequently transferred on watercolour paper. I am trying to mix the... liquid characteristics of emulsion with the bi-dimensional characteristics of the images. This technique helps me define the evanescent sense of sexuality. What is it left to remember of our passions? Outlines. Fragments. Shavings. Our imagination helps to build the image but in the end we are not able to remember at all. Who is that? And what happened between the two of us?».
