Across the river

«Across the river is a long term project examining the scars of the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica, located in the northern corner of Kosovo. The city was once one of the wealthiest areas in the former country of Yugoslavia. Today, it is split into two parallel worlds divided by the river Ibar, which presents both a physical and ideological barrier between the northern and the southern section of the city.
While the Albanian South-Mitrovica claims to belong to the independent state of Kosovo, the Serbian North-Mitrovica still pledges allegiance with Serbia.
This series illustrates the distance and isolation that is caused by the constant uncertainty and distrust between the two ethnic groups, which is a much larger barrier than the river itself. The wounds from the war are still fresh and the tension taut. Fifteen years after the end of the Kosovo war, many Serbs and Albanians have yet to cross the river to the other side». ( Jasper Walter Bastian)

Recent separatism referendums are teaching us to preserve the idea of Europe with more respect and care. The fact that a country, an ethnicity, a group no longer wants to share a project or an idea of government and cooperation makes us feel more fragile and exposed. Closed within our national borders, we forget that this destiny, in a much more brutal and violent way, has already been lived and forced on other people that are now part of Europe like we are.

We don’e even consider that near us, literally just outside of our yard, there are open wounds and the word crisis has a different meaning at different latitudes. The meaning of a festival like Menotrentuno is also expressed in this, with a steady gaze over fleeting borders, a hopeful eye amidst the confusion. The goal of such complex and widespread photographic thinking is to remind us that we go beyond borders and passports. Who we are and who we wish to continue being. [ Sonia Borsato ]
