Great photographers and Italy

Palazzo della Ragione Photography, in Milan, hosts Henri Cartier-Bresson and the others. The great photographers and Italy, the second and last step of the performance begun last March, on the occasion of Expo 2015, with Italy Inside Out. With the aim of telling how 36 great international photographers have looked at Italy during almost eighty years, the exhibition propose over 200 images, often true icons, divided into seven broad areas. Each of them develops an indirect history of photography and the evolution of its languages.
The long Italian journey starts with a self-portrait by Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1933: his liberal dream of stopping time, of capturing the decisive moment in the continuous flowing of reality, will affect photography everywhere and for a long time, and it will be chosen by generations of photographers. After Cartier-Bresson and his thirty years journey, the exhibition shows the works by Robert Capa, David Seymour, Cuchi White, Herbert List, William Klein and Sebastião Salgado. Section by section, this suggestive photographic itinerary dedicated to Italy goes on with the images by Claude Nori, Helmut Newton, Abelardo Morell, Gregory Crewdson, Paul Strand, Joan Fontcuberta, Michael Ackerman, Joel Meyerowitz, Martin Parr and many other world-famous photographers. The exhibition ideally ends with autobiographical stories: Nobuyoshi Araki, fascinated by Venice, photographs himself with carnival masks and tells us about his encounters through a subjective lens. Sophie Zénon retraces the history of her family, which was forced to emigrate: she places side by side the portraits of her grandparents and their towns and landscapes. Finally Elina Brotherus and her self-portraits with landscapes connect with the beginning of our journey, with the amazing and modern self-portrait by Henri Cartier -Bresson which kicked off this long journey.
Henri Cartier-Bresson and the others. The great photographers and Italy is promoted and produced by the City of Milan Culture, Palazzo della Ragione, with Civita, Contrast and GAmm Giunti and curated by Giovanna Calvenzi.
