Hunting with Eagles

Have you ever seen an eagle, which is quietly cradled in the arms of an old man? The man is a burkitshi, a hunter, and his eagle likes to be carried in his arms like a child, explains the caption. Could this be the synthesis of the relationship that develops between the hunters and their animals? We are in Kazakhistan, near the borders with Mongolia and the Altaj Mountains. An area inaccessible because of the terrible climate, with temperatures as low as - 40 ° C places where only the strongest survive. Here hunters are counted in no more than fifty or sixty and, year after year, their number decreases inexorably. They take the eaglets from the nest, they raise them in their own homes, train them to hunt and live together with them. Tutti i cacciatori, quando parlano delle aquile, lo fanno riferendosi a loro come membri della famiglia. All the hunters, when they speak of their eagles, do so as if referring to them as family members. Palani Mohan speaks about this intense and very special relationship in the exhibition Hunting with Eagles. It is useless to deny that, overwhelmed by tons of the rubbish images on falconry, the prejudice in dealing with this exhibition was not small. The surprise was instead to discover a work that lives on an anthropological approach cleverly colluded with a formal manic exaltation, which makes it very unusual. The often-unbalanced relationship between form and content in these pictures find a perfect balance in which all the elements are added together and enrich each other. The compositional construction, which is very classical, is able to provide a surprising dynamism even within the static nature of many images. Surprising even the extended tonal range, which enriches the pleasure and sense of grandeur of the shots, despite the obvious limitations of the support used to enable the exhibitions to be outdoors as in the tradition of the event. Interesting in the case of the latter the interaction between the garden environment, the prints and the images themselves, where at certain times shadows can be seen cast from the plants on the photographs.
