Vestiges 1991-2014

It opened on 7th December last at the Forte di Bard, in the province of Aosta, the first Italian exhibition of the imposing photographic project by Josef Koudelka.
Vestiges, this the title of the work, sees the author in fact committed for over twenty years, during which he became guardian, by means of his photographic interpretation, of some of the most important archaeological sites of Greek and Roman culture. The objective of the Czech photographer, for a long time a member of the Magnum Photos, is ambitious: to transform the rubble in to hope, to return to the ruins their most authentic beauty, without giving in to the lure of the usual melancholy celebrations. In other words, Koudelka would like to use art to regain possession of the remains of a world that, little by little, is hopelessly vanishing before our eyes.
To do so, he has carried out a long itinerary through twenty countries – from Greece to Lebanon, from Syria to Algeria, from Turkey to Italy – and more than two hundred locations overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. An unprecedented exploration, not yet completed, which led him before some of the Greek-Roman culture landmarks, such as the Temple of Delphi, the Temples of Zeus and Poseidon (Greece), the Roman Forum and the Via Appia (Rome), the Temple of the Sibyl (Tivoli), the Temple of Apollo (Turkey) and the tombs of Petra (Jordan).
The exhibition, curated by Gabriele Accornero and Andrea Holzerr, brings together over sixty photographs, of which twenty-two of these are panoramics of a very large dimension, in an exhibition devoted to minimalism that returns the sense of the passage among the ruins. The layout of the images within the gunner’s halls of the fort evokes the path of discovery made by Koudelka in these extraordinary places to stop and promote its beauty. The exhibition also includes the screening of about three hundred and fifty shots related to the sets of Vestiges, some of the most important books of/about the author and a specific site dedicated to the Valle d'Aosta.
