Under the skin of reality
«Everybody can see what they want... I begin from the tools, but I can also confuse them with other subjects every time I look at the images. In the place of tools you have to find your meanings, your imagination is able to tell a story made of your personal meanings». This is how Giacomelli himself describes his work made on a research of abstraction always increasingly more powerful and determined. The exhibition presented in Cortona was realised by
Shilt Publishing & Gallery in collaboration with
Cortona On The Move and
Archivio Mario Giacomelli - Sassoferrato on the occasion of the English-language edition of the book
Mario Giacomelli. Sotto la pelle del reale, published in 2011 by 24 Ore Cultura. The images on display are drawn from the series
Metamorfosi della terra (Metamorphosis of the earth),
Motivo suggerito dal taglio dell'albero,
Presa di Coscienza sulla natura, Poesie in cerca d'autore.
The work on display would, in the stated intentions, emphasize that for Giacomelli photography was an
organism to give life to continuously in the alternation of the possible correlations between sign and referent in an attempt to uncover the plot in which is interwoven reality. While the world changes ceaselessly, man tries to give a representation that in fact is always hinged on key points individually subjected to the action of Time. The photograph – or rather, the creative act that makes it happen – then inevitably ends to be based on memory, on the effort of human beings who try to mend the inexplicable tears produced by the immediate and relentless making of a past of every present. From here the choice of the abstraction step is relatively short. What leaves one a little puzzled over this exhibition is the decision to favour an important aspect, of course, the
corpus giacomelliano, but perhaps also the easiest and most obvious, with the risk of moving the cognitive focal point compared to this author on a reductive conception of his thought, in which the emphasis ends up falling on photography as an aesthetic object. All subject to the obvious commercial reasons behind the exhibition itself. [
