A century of photography and drawing

The Main Hall and the Upper Rooms of Palazzo Santa Margherita in Modena hosts the exhibit VERSUS. Artists’ challenge to their model over a century of photography and drawing, curated by Andrea Bruciati, Daniele De Luigi and Serena Golden.

The exhibition features photographs and drawings by 125 artists from the last 100 years of the history of art, from 1915 to 2016. Alongside works by many of the protagonists of the 20th century, an essential point of reference for generations to come, with works from the collections of the Galleria Civica and major public and private collections, work by emerging artists born between 1979 and 1990 will be on show, created especially for the occasion, and which will go on to become part of the Museum Collection.

VERSUS concept proposes a take on the theme of competition as an analysis of the evolutionary processes of the artwork over the course of the decades. In fact, all artist start out from a number of sources of inspiration moving towards an attempt to overcome the models that preceded him or her: the exhibition project – as the curators explain – revolves around the tension generated from there, even at a distance, thanks to a comparison bereft of direct physical competition, yet no less intense and tiring. The artist thus submits to a discipline, an inner effort, an intellectual and professional commitment to face what takes shape as an outright alter ego. Along this way, the exhibition itinerary touches on various themes offering visitors the chance to discover from the archetypes of Mario Sironi and Filippo De Pisis to the photographic portraits of August Sander, Walker Evans and Thomas Ruff; from the mis-en-scčne of his own body staged by Urs Lüthi to the self-portraits of Roberto Cuoghi; from the Photo-Graffie by Vincenzo Agnetti to the graphic landscapes of Mario Giacomelli. And much more.

The exhibition – organised and produced by the Galleria Civica and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, in collaboration with the association Le Arti Tessili – also aims to provide the opportunity to valorise the wealth and complexity of the Collections of the Galleria Civica di Modena showing the ability to converse with surprising vitality as much with the great art of the 20th century as with the emerging artists of the new generations.
