Tools of Resistance

Of the conflict in Ukraine we have seen thousands of images, almost all aimed in one way or another, to document as much as possible, of what was happening. Sasha Kurmaz's work begins however from a very different assumption. His aim is not intended for journalistic purposes in the face of events, but to try to investigate on an anthropological level what was happening after the death of the first militants, a result of the use of weapons by the police. These tragic events have caused a process, however, not devoid of creativity, which led to the construction of homemade weapons intended to fight back, albeit unequal, to those of the police. Questi tragici episodi hanno provocato un processo, peraltro non scevro di creatività, che ha portato alla costruzione di armi fatte in casa destinate a controbattere, sia pure in modo impari, quelle delle forze di polizia. Kurmaz decided to take these objects out of context, already subtracted by the militants from their canonical use, photographing them on a white background. The resulting effect is that of an alienating classification that emphasizes the tangible and symbolic value, on an anthropological level, of these weapons.
The exhibition in the tower, on the floor below the exhibition of Mizutani, is clear as if to want to underline an attitude from an atlas of anthropology. The appearance of an implicit museum is strengthened by the burden of history and the works placed on the walls, whose catalogue content is well suited to the ultimate meaning of the operation. In fact, observing the photographs you remain stunned at the variety and ordinariness of the objects used by the Ukrainian militants. We are surprised to see that the l’Esprit d'Adaptation may have led men of the twenty-first century to rediscover the offensive importance of sticks or stones, primordial weapons that mentally we are used to relegating to the idea of ancestral conflicts.
