The Larry Towell Show

FPmag met Larry Towell in Cortona during the opening days of Cortona On The Move, 2016. Despite numerous commitments, including a concert that saw him as the protagonist and a shower of interview requests, Larry Towell agreed to speak to us, even if very briefly, about his work with particular reference to The World from My Front Porch. «When I was a teenager – says Larry Towell – my father once scolded me for wanting to go to Florida with a friend. It was too far from home, and the distance would have corrupted me. I was 16 years old. He hated travelling. The world was his veranda and this had made him what he was». Nonetheless by contrast Larry’s life led him to travel around the world, while maintaining a very solid bond with his homeland, where he lives on a farm in Ontario.

The Larry Towell Show is the first retrospective exhibition in Europe dedicated to Larry Towell, well-known Canadian photographer from the Magnum Photos Agency. As part of Cortona On The Move in 2016 is in fact presented a series of works that summarise his extensive production, which embraces very different themes, from places of conflict like Afghanistan, Palestine and El Salvador, to projects characterised by a more intimate dimension. In this area lie works such as the one dedicated to the Mennonites community or The World From My Front Porch.

The exhibition, like all retrospectives, has its strengths and its limitations. Among the first we can definitely consider the possibility that offers the visitor who has little or no knowledge of the work by Larry Towell to accumulate a maximum of knowledge on the author's projects. On the other hand, inevitably, it is practically impossible to render in this way the completeness of the individual works that have marked the evolution of the photographer.

As far as the setup is concerned, the rooms which are found in the Bastione di Santa Maria Nuova in the Fortress of Girifalco – in my opinion among the most beautiful of the fortresses and the entire Cortona event – have made it possible to create sufficiently clear divisions between the various sections of the exhibition. Once again we feel obliged to emphasise Arianna Rinaldo’s work, which has shown that attention and that sensitivity which would be nice to see more often in Italy. [ Sandro Iovine ]

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer. In that time her husband was in prison accused of the attempt to kill Russian President Putin.
