Make a wish by Loulou d'Aki

It is Make a wish by the Swedish photographer Loulou d’Aki the project winner of the 2nd edition of the Photobook Review and Prize, a call for dummy (book prototypes) with free of charge participation for amateur and professional photographers, organised by Cortona On The Move.

The work was selected by Hannah Watson, director of Trolley Books, and TJ Boulting contemporary art gallery with the following motivation: «The dummy book by Loulou d'Aki was designed to provide a detailed representation of the context of her portraits of young people, photographed mostly in the Middle East. The very title of the project, Make a Wish, is a request to write in a notebook their hopes and fears about the future. The book format is reduced and lends itself to writing something intimate, like a small notebook you can carry on you, and includes various handwritten pages in various languages and scanned. The layout is clean, elegant and well structured: it starts with a short text that introduces the book in poetic tones, and there are captions at the end that provide complete information about the subjects and their history. The portraits are gorgeous and alternate with the images of the cities she visited, from Gaza to Tehran. It is a project that fits very well with the book format, and is also a long-term investigation whose natural evolution would be a book. The dummy was presented in a small leather case that resembles the idea of the notebook and underlines the conception of this book, which was created as a personal and precious object to contain the images».

In addition to Make a Wish, during the talk by Hannah Watson during the inaugural days of the festival (15th July 2017), the following works were selected and discussed: The Restoration Will by Mayumi Suzuki, The Absence of Two by Akihito Yoshida, Prendo Casa by Francesca Cirilli, O Post Mijo by Francesca Leonardi and Tessuti Toniu by Francesca Romana Semerano.

Make a wish by Loulou d’Aki folllows the photo book Dear Japanese: children of war by the Japanese photographer Miyuki Okuyama, currently on display and for sale in Cortona, and will be published as the latter as a book thanks to Cortona On The Move and exhibited within the 2018 edition of the festival.
