Ich bin Waldviertel

Hannah and Alena are respectively 7 and 9 years old and live in Merkenbrechts, an Austrian village of just 170 inhabitants in the Waldviertel, on the border with the Czech Republic. Carla Kogelman meets them while she is making a documentary about the region and, immediately, a close relationship was formed between the photographer and the farming family of which the two girls were part. From here, to reawaken the memories of Kogelman’s childhood is a short step. So that is how the story of everyday life simplicity begins, of fun that comes from nowhere, crossed from time to time by the innate turmoil of age. The feeling is that through Hannah and Alena the photographer is trying to portray herself when she was their age. The atmosphere of the photographs is suspended and somehow brings to mind some of Sally Man's works, of course, done with obvious differences.
Kogelman's work last year won the International Award Happiness On The Move (here the winner of this year), promoted by Cortona On The Move, but frankly I was not very convinced. The overall feeling I had whilst visiting the exhibition was mostly of boredom, combined with a certain discomfort for the situations proposed, which seem decidedly winking of the eye the paternal and maternal instinct of visitors. A deviation which is not worth climbing to the however beautiful Fortress of Girifalco, all without detracting from the formal gratification that many will try, with the certainty that more will appreciate the very topic and the Arcadian atmosphere that cloaks the black and white of Kogelman.
