Across the River: Tales of a Divided City

A work that of Jasper Walter Bastian on the physical divisions and not only of the city of Mitrovica. Divided into two parts by the river Ibar, it lives two realities at the same time linked to the sense of belonging of its population to the political entities of Serbia and Kosovo, states that after the demise of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia have been through moments of bloody conflict and still live together in a tension that is not likely to ebb. What was once one of the richest cities in Yugoslavia today sees a profound dichotomy between the area south of the river, which makes direct reference to the Albanian culture, and the north that is recognised as that of the Serbian. The photographic work is trying to restore the atmosphere arising from the situation in Mitrovica, with a result which quite frankly is boring because of the repetition of formal schemes established in the narration of these kinds of stories, without adding much to what is already known and without offering any specific flashes. In any case, everyone will be able to individually assess the work by browsing the gallery that precedes these notes.
If an interesting index can be derived from the work by Bastian, this is to be found again in the attention to the growing tensions in the Balkan Peninsula. These images, joining the chorus of projects that lately overrun the international competitions of photojournalism, probably suffer the dutiful fascination of historical anniversaries due to expire, but at the same time offer some ideas that maybe should not be neglected in a wide-ranging reflection on the international political situation.
