REACHING THE CAPE A photographic road-trip from Italy to North Cape to reveal how passion and motivation can open up new perspectives about life

In the summer of 2011, Matteo Di Giovanni is in Bosnia and Herzegovina. While working on the project, which will conclude with a Masters in Journalism at the University of Westminster in London, he suffers a serious accident. His life is hanging by a thread and he wakes up from a coma only in October after numerous operations including the trans femoral amputation of his left leg.
Matteo’s vocation is photography, and he will not give it up. He works mainly with analogue photography, a choice that requires a slower pace, made up of waiting, and in this respect is not unlike the process of creation and adaptation of the body to a prosthesis.
Four years after the accident, Matteo Di Giovanni finally takes the photographic journey to the North Cape and back which he had had in mind for some time, and which with the accident had put aside. An adventure, a metaphor of rebirth and to regain what at one point seemed lost forever. A story made possible by a great will, combined with enthusiasm and a new extremely innovative prosthesis. A fusion between the craftsmanship of analogue photography and of ultra-sophisticated prosthetic technology, in a progressive move from populated areas to explore an almost uninhabited land, before returning home. The trip was made possible by a crowdfunding campaign and the involvement of several entities, including MiCamera, who is taking care of the artistic management of the project, Gianni Romano’s Studio Fahrenheit, who will handle the processing of films and prints, Ryuichi Watanabe’s New Old Camera, Alpa and the Swedish photographer and videomaker Lucas Pernin, who is entrusted with the daily documentation of about two months of travelling.
