If from one side, the image can be means of comprehension and knowledge of the condition of the migrants, from the other side it can be exploited as a way to acquire consent.
The posters from Lega Nord are clear examples of how often the image of the immigrants is used in this sense. The immigrants are sometimes represented as a human multitude invading the country. Traditional values are indirectly singled out and threatened by the stream of men and women with different cultures and religions. Symbolically this is accomplished by highlighting the number of immigrants. Textually, words like "illegal immigrant" and "criminal", con precise conseguenze. are shown on the same syntactical level with very precise consequences. Firstly, both words are absorbed under the same extremely negative meaning. Secondly, the same visual association bring people to negatively preconceive the entire immigrant category.
In other cases, it is religion to be stressed. An immigrant is not only a "dangerous criminal invader", but also a religious fanatic with the only objective to destroy Christianity. To be noted on this regard is the overlapping of the star and crescent on the facade of a Catholic church.
It is also important to observe the choice of red colour gradients on the graphics. It immediately overloads the Islamic symbol with generic connotations of danger.
Similarly, women with Islamic clothes are put in front of the Dome, symbol of Christianity, and this highlights the threat of occupation that immigrants represent.
Undoubtedly, this has social consequences especially when Muslim women with traditional clothes are shown together with two Western girls. At first glance this message seems to defend women’s rights, but a subtext is clearly legible; the objectification of the female body is as clear as the allusions lying behind the clothes of the two Muslim women.
