Dread and Dreams

During the long evenings of screenings of the eleventh edition at the Angkor Photo Festival & Workshops, one of the authors who impressed us the most was the Afghan Zalmaï. In the selection curated by Françoise Callier, the Afghan photographer presented an excerpt from his book Dread and Dreams, with which he wanted to give a personal vision of his native country in open contrast with that offered by the Western media. In his reading of the facts, the mistakes made by the politicians in Afghanistan have had, and continue to have, extremely wide repercussions on a planetary level. Not least among these is the question of migration, which he has dedicated ample space with images that affects the empathy shown towards the subjects. Works, on this phenomenon (also very good ones) we have seen a lot of in this period, but no one so far had struck that sense of closeness to the subjects depicted, probably arising from the condition of the migrant lived by Zalmaï himself, just fifteen at the time of the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan in 1980. For this, thanks also to the collaboration of Françoise Callier, we decided to meet him to tell us about the genesis of his work. [ S. I. ]
