The farm in the centre

«The demand for more rewarding production methods in agriculture has made a lot of farms shut down because they cannot adapt to the development. These farms are neither profitable to tear down nor to restore and this has created a landscape of decay in many rural communities.
In the Danish village of Kare the inhabitants are constantly reminded of this fact. Right in the centre of the village lies their former pride, an old farm called Karbygaard, which is completely destroyed by decay. In 2006, a group of people from the village started the association The Preservation of Karbygaard, but after six years of struggling to create life on the farm the project is set on hold. Some of the inhabitants of Kare have given up hoping that Karbygaard will be restored. Others are waiting for new initiatives and ideas to be realised». (Sofie Amalie Klougart)

In high school they teach us the meaning of the word nostalgia. We learn it by heart while studying Greek. What we don’t know is that the feeling, once met, never leaves us. It’s a subtle pain, a pressure to the chest, a void that you will never fully fill.

The lack of a fulfilling sense of living, the understanding of things that are sacred without being religious, the respect for those who came before us and a sense of dignity to pass on to our children. Our lives are clothes covering cathedrals honoring our memory. Cathedrals whose shadow follows us but we cannot protect or respect. Literature cannot or is unable to explain this subtle and intangible tragedy.

The task is left to photography that was born in melancholy but with the power of preservation. Works like those of Sofie Amalie Klougart guide our eyes towards these cathedrals, that are under our eyes by often hard to recognize, and protect our heart teaching us to live with Nostalgia, to transform it into a wise traveling companion.
