The sound that makes images

There are many ways to deal with the history of photography. And usually no one can evade the discomfort that gripped him/her when they were at school at the moment of a history lesson. You remain more than pleasantly surprised when you cross the threshold of the Atelier des Forges, renovated and resplendent for this year's event and elected to the temple of musical photography. In the Total Records, exhibition, in fact, the exhibits are not the photographs, but the record covers more or less well known on which, they have been used. As to the relationship between music and photography it has always been, thanks to the collaboration of a colleague and long time friend, an anchor of this magazine, it was not possible not to remain surprised in front of the parade of big names in the history of photography displayed on the packaging of the 33 or 45 rpm vinyl records. Other than the amazement for the parade of famous names, the décor is striking very well done, with its brightly painted walls to make sense of the divisions within the sections of the exhibition. Very interesting then, the openings to the covers individually elaborated or created from scratch to replace the originals, and the sections on propaganda records rather than those with the voices of important cultural figures recorded. And still the experiments between music and image, such as Mayokero by Roy Kafri, in which the characters featured on the historical covers are animated to sing a well-known song on a musical backing created for the occasion.

We could not miss a section also dedicated to the phenomenon sleevefaces, with an invitation to all visitors to send, by 20th September 2015, a photo of themselves in which their face is replaced by that of the cover of a vinyl record.
Fascinating, finally, the full series of images in which the cover was flanked by the original and / or the profiling which was used to trace the production process the photographer as much as the art director author of the cover. An experience that for those not versed in the secret things of the publishing world can only arouse interest and perhaps, a little surprise.
Instead dedicated to a world where it becomes difficult to determine where the boundaries of a kind of expression end, and where those of another begin, there is the exhibition The LP Company, organised by the artistic director of the Rencontres 2015, Sam Stourdzé. The exhibition, always presented at the Atelier des Forges, is proposed as a snapshot of the collection and documentation work by LP (Laurent Schlittler e Patrick Claudet) from which emerges a material that is not hazardous to define hybrid for its constant references and contamination between objects, video and still performance images. This work has been presented to the public for the first time in this exhibition at Arles.
After the first exhibitions, we had already reconciled with the 2015 edition of the Rencontres, but during a visit to Total Records we really had the feeling to be back in Arles and at one of those editions that would really be a shame to miss. [ S. I. ]
