The Visa d'Or Magazine goes to Peter Bauza

There were four finalists competing for the Visa d'Or Magazine 2016: Peter Bauza (Echo Photojournalism) with Copacabana Palace, Brésil, Valerio Bispuri with Paco, une histoire de drogue, Lorenzo Meloni (Magnum Photos) with Yémen and Frédéric Noy (Cosmos) with Ekifire, les demi-morts. A fairly short list, dense with names and important works that last night, Friday 2nd September 2016, followed one another for a little more than a handful of minutes on the big screen set up in a crowded Campo Santo in Perpignan. Only a few minutes, but for the editorial staff of FPmag it seemed like an eternity.

In fact a different tension flowed between us last night, full of emotion not without expectation. For once it was not just professional curiosity to keep us with bated breath in that time frame stretched and distorted by the suspense of the moment, but something more subtle and engaging. Among the names pronounced in the darkness of the Campo Santo there was actually a photographer from Echo Photojournalism, the photo agency of the network set up by Machia Press Publishing and of which our own media outlet is part. Which already filled us with a certain satisfaction.

Strange and at the same time extremely pleasant, therefore, the feeling of when, the expected ritual was over, the patron of Visa pour l'Image, Jean-François Leroy, pronounces with sacredness the name of Peter Bauza. Beyond the contingencies of the moment, the German photographer and the international agency based in Milan have in fact entered in that list of winners, which since 1990 has seen the succession of people such as the likes of Sebastiao Salgado/Magnum (1990), Francesco Zizola/Contrasto (1995), Philip Blenkinsop/Vu' (2003), Zalmaï (2009), Stephanie Sinclair/VII pour National Geographic (2012) and Daniel Berehulak pour The New York Times/Getty Images Reportage (2015), just to name a few.

During the same evening two other important prizes were also awarded: the Visa d'Or d'Honneur du Figaro Magazine 2016, which went to the famous Stanley Greene, and the Prix de la Ville de Perpignan Rémi Ochlik 2016, awarded to Niels Ackermann/Lundi13. Among the other awards this year, we remember the Visa d’Or de l’Information numérique 2016, given to Magnus Wennman and Jenny Svedberg Tunnel, for the work Les dessins de Fatima / Fatima's drawings (Aftonbladet, Suède), during the evening of Thursday, 1st September, and the Visa d’Or humanitaire du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) 2016 was awarded to Juan Arredondo/Getty Images Reportage during the same evening for the work on child soldiers in Colombia. This evening, Saturday, 3rd September 2016, will be the time to find out the winner of the Visa d'Or News 2016, another prestigious award contemplated as part of this festival dedicated to photojournalism. We'll see. [ Stefania Biamonti ]
