Elliott Erwitt, Personae

The 23rd September opens the retrospective Eliott Erwitt Personae, dedicated not only to the famous black and white pictures of the beloved photographer, but including also his color production, less known. The event has been organized by Civita Mostre, in collaboration with SudEst57 and promoted by Cassa dei Risparmi of Forlì Foundation, Civitas, Romagna Terra del Buon vivere and with the Municipality, the Division and the Museums and Culture Service of Forlì. The exhibition, through Fabrizio Confalonieri project, has been curated by Biba Giacchetti.

Elliott Erwitt (Paris, 1928) – memorable member of Magnum Photos agency since 1953 and considered the "human comedy photographer" – has always included in his work a sharp but emphatetic gaze, from which emerge a subtle irony, capable to report the everyday life complexity. The exhibition title precisely alludes to these personal work style characteristics.

From the beginning of his career, Erwitt has used the black and white tecnique maintaing, throughout the years, this preference, nevertheless the photo industry’s technological progress and the avaiability of more and more cheaper color films. Decades later, the artist has reviewed part of his color production, collectiong the images in the volume, published in 2013, Kolor by teNeues, whose images are showed in the exhibition. The work of the author, indeed, has developed throughout the years, in particular the production realized under the nickname Andrè S.Solidor has changed to the point of including the characteristics of contemporary art, masks and theatre. The artist alter ego appreciates all the aspect the photographer dislike, the technologies, photoshop and the eccentricity by itself, reported in the exhibition’s section dedicated to colours, which opens with a video.

The personal, which provide an audioguide available for all the public, is composed by 170 photographs, personally selected by the author and Biba Giacchetti. For the 22nd September has been planned, the ufficial exhibition opening and, for the ones interested, a meeting with the author, leads by Roberto Cotroneo, in the church of San Giacomo.
