Starting from Puglia, a region in which the positive tourism trend offers good prospects from an economic point of view, Karl Mancini, a photographer for the Echo Photojournalism agency, began his long-term project on polluted areas in Italy, which are less talked about.
Despite their unpopularity, these areas have the highest rates of pollution, exercising a tragic impact on the health of the population and consequently on local health budgets. The investigation starts from Brindisi, where the situation is very serious although virtually unknown outside the borders of the region. The coincidence in the area of the pharmaceutical industry and a coal fired thermal power plant makes it impossible to trace the strict liability on the origins of the pollutants. Meanwhile, the occurrence of cases of cancer in the population is rising dramatically with nothing being done to improve the situation.
