Four Seasons

The eye of an outsider can be a great help to a community. And that is not to say that we don’t care for appearances around here. We usually assess ourselves and our surroundings knowing that something uncontrollable and unpredictable happens outside of our protective skin layer.

We try to be ready, presentable, able to respond to external pressure quickly, with strength and intelligence. Actually, the delicate edge separating us from the world is an essential topic throughout our existence. In mere numbers, the 5 senses meet the 4 elements and the passing of time – in each instant we interpret our surrounding, nature and community with these few parameters, each time being gripped by this question. I hear, see, smell, touch, taste, therefore I think, but who am I truly? I build an idea of the world, but who will tell my being? These are complex topics, perhaps not present in our daily life. We live in a small town with its natural and cultural peculiarities, but our daily routine distracts us from the big existential questions. The arrival of a photographer brought us towards reflection. An external eye pushed us to reconsider, especially when the eye (human or photographic) wants to see the universal inside each of us. The place we live in is harsh but happy, thanks to a nature that throughout hundreds or thousands of years has made us who we are. At the same time there’s a way of self-representation in front of a photographer.

We are who we are expected to be: Mediterranean shepherds, tied to the season cycles, but also characters in a postcard-like reality that we seem to enjoy after all. But in front of the quest of a photographer who’s aiming at representing a universal topic, detached from the performing for the camera so present in our contemporary times, an important question arises. The research process, compressed in a few days, was stretched into long moments chasing the shot, this strange perception of time that probably resurfaces when looking at an image. An open question to ourselves, asked with kindness and awareness.

It’s hard to imagine a more successful photographic project. Three days to raise a profound question; these images probably represent that magical suspension in time that occurs when we think of something bigger than ourselves. [ Fabio Calzia ]

Amina Okuyeva poses for the photo in a flat she shares with her mother and son. She was on Maidan from December 2014 working as a medical volunteer.
