Ai Weiwei. Odyssey

Has been opened in Palermo, at the ZAC – Zisa Contemporary Arts Zone exhibition space, the installation Odyssey by Ai Weiwei. The exhibition, which remains opened up to 20th June 2017 had been organised by ruber.contemporanea in collaboration with Palermo’s Academy of Fine Arts | dICODA Department of Comunication and Art Education.

Odyssey research project, underway since 2015, has been promoted by Amnesty International Italia and by Palermo Municipality’s Cultural Division. It examines the historical, political and social circumstances of refugee’s crisis that develops whithin refugee camps all over the world. The installation has been realized in the context of Diritti in Cantiere initiative, a cultural and edyfing event which hastens the XXXII Amnesty International Italian General Assembly, that for this year take place in Sicily, a land of populations and cultural encounters.

Odyssey occupys the entire ZAC exhibition space’s surface. The floor has been covered by floorpaper whose iconographic motif is tipify by the style of the graphic elements from ancient Greek and Egyptian civilisations. It heads the public discovering the different scenes of escape and destruction which still nowadays dominate the migrants’ reality. These above-mentioned pictures have been collected in one hand through social media platforms and on the other hand by the artist himself, in the preview documentative period.

As a result of his political commitment, and his personal artistic work, Ai Weiwei has shined during the years. Indeed Amnesty International nominated him Consciousness Ambassador for the year 2015. His experience as a refugee awarded the graphic installation a deep and stronger narrative charge. [ Sara Zanini ]
